Around the district is a monthly update that includes a collection of stories from Richmond schools. These stories highlight Richmond's vibrant learning community, which fosters student engagement, creativity, and well-being in inclusive learning environments.

As December unfolded with its unmistakable holiday charm, our talented students and staff fully embraced the festive atmosphere. With great care, they packed their musical instruments and set off for the local mall, ready to share the joy of music with our community through two heartwarming and unforgettable concerts.

At the mall, amidst the usual flurry of holiday shopping, something different happened when the students began to play. Their music, resonating through the corridors, created a pause in the day-to-day rush. Shoppers, often absorbed in their tasks, found themselves drawn to the melodies. It was a clear demonstration of how music, even in the most unexpected places, can capture attention and bring a sense of togetherness and joy.

These concerts were more than just performances; they were an embodiment of the spirit of giving. The funds raised were donated to BC Children's Hospital, with a focus on supporting mental health programs and research for youth. Through this initiative, the students not only showcased their musical talents but also contributed significantly to a cause that impacts the wider community. This act of giving back through their art was a powerful lesson in community engagement, demonstrating the impact they can have beyond the classroom and stage.

In a delightful display of creativity and collaboration, students recently took on the Goldilocks Challenge, an engaging activity that showcased their innovation and teamwork. Drawing inspiration from the timeless tale, they worked together to build chairs strong enough to cradle Goldilocks' cherished books.

This hands-on project presented various challenges, offering students invaluable learning opportunities. When their initial designs faltered under the weight of the books, they demonstrated remarkable resilience. Embracing these challenges, the students refined and improved their designs through trial and error, embodying the spirit of perseverance. As the Goldilocks Challenge came to a close, the air was filled with a shared sense of triumph. Each chair, now supporting the books successfully, stood as a symbol of the students' inventiveness, collaborative spirit, and perserverance.

Through this project, the students learned a powerful lesson in a fun and practical way. They discovered that by staying determined and using their creativity, they can find solutions to any challenge. It taught them that persistence and thinking outside the box are key to overcoming obstacles, no matter how big they seem.

Excitement filled the air as students immersed themselves in the vibrant world of Bollywood dance. This form of dance is a highly expressive and energetic style rooted in Indian cinema, characterized by its intricate choreography, colourful costumes, and fusion of various dance forms, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of India.

The initiative was made possible by the support of the Parent Advisory Council (PAC), enabling each class to participate in five days of lively and immersive dance workshops. Following their training, the students visited Steveston-London Secondary School, where they presented a wonderful performance.

Engaging in Bollywood dance allowed the students to embark on a cultural exploration, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the diverse traditions that enrich our community. This experience underscores the vital role of the arts in promoting inclusivity and cultural awareness in our schools.

The Identity Art Project, celebrated at the school board office, showcases a heartwarming collaboration by students from various grades, united under the theme "We Are All Connected." The project began with kindergarten students examining the similarities and differences in their family meals. Capturing their favourite foods in photographs and displaying them on paper plates, they sparked engaging classroom discussions about cultural diversity and shared experiences.

Following their engaging photography project, the students transitioned to creating self-portraits using sharpies. Reflecting on their own images, they focused on illustrating the qualities they most appreciated about themselves. This process of self-reflection and creativity then blossomed into an exciting group painting activity. Here, they had the opportunity to experiment with a wide array of art materials, such as paintbrushes, pipettes and squeegees. This stage of the project not only allowed them to express their individuality but also encouraged them to explore and embrace a diverse range of artistic techniques, adding depth and richness to their artistic expressions.

To bring this inspiring project to a close, the students creatively combined their individual artworks into a single, comprehensive canvas using weaving techniques. This final woven creation is a beautiful representation of their shared creativity and the deep connections they have forged through this artistic journey.

A vibrant Science Celebration brought together 188 students from seven science classes. This event highlighted over a hundred unique projects, each a testament to the students' creativity and scientific curiosity.

Starting with concepts learned in class, the students progressed from structured lab work to developing their own independent projects. They were encouraged to think creatively and explore new questions, working alone or in pairs. Their projects spanned a range of fields: life sciences, health sciences, earth and environmental sciences, engineering, physics, chemistry, and computer science.

The celebration took place in the school rotunda and was a pivotal moment for students to hone their presentation skills, engage in enriching discussions with their peers, and proudly showcase their scientific achievements. This gathering was an interactive forum where students could receive feedback, learn from one another, and appreciate the diverse range of scientific exploration represented.

Eight exceptional projects were selected to represent the school at the renowned Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair. This selection was not only an honour but also a significant milestone in the students' academic journey, offering a pathway to the Canada-Wide Science Fair. For these young scientists, this recognition was a testament to their hard work, ingenuity, and passion for science, marking an important step in their journey of discovery and academic excellence.

A secondary music class recently made waves with their stunning performance of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" in the 2023 Canadian Music Class Challenge. A group of 26 gifted students, ranging from Grades 9 to 12, devoted an entire month to mastering their rendition, a dedication that paid off with recognition in the Senior Instrumental (Grades 11-12) category.

This challenge, however, was more than just a competition; it was a creative journey for the students. The rhythm section was particularly noteworthy, starting the performance with an impressive introduction. The students aimed for precision in each note while adding a personal touch to their performance, showcasing their individual talents within the ensemble.

Year after year, this event celebrates musical talent, drawing classes from across Canada to share their best interpretations in pursuit of top honours. Participating in the Canadian Music Class Challenge is a coveted opportunity, allowing students to both demonstrate their musical skills and appreciate the extraordinary talents of their peers from across the nation.

A group of elementary students transformed a simple potluck idea into a dynamic "marché culturel" project to benefit KidSports Richmond. This initiative was rooted in celebrating their diverse cultural backgrounds, aiming to strengthen students' connections to their personal and family identities. It also provided a practical learning experience in marketing and finance.

Working in teams, the students put together an extensive and culturally varied menu. They also designed local business websites, complete with product details for their market. Throughout the project, they sought feedback from staff and peers, fine-tuning their sales strategies and perfecting their unique dishes. Adding a creative touch, the students produced French-language videos, sharing insights into their culinary endeavours.

This project was a resounding success, raising over $800 for KidSports Richmond. In recognition of their efforts, Olympic speed walker Evan Dunfee, associated with KidSports, is scheduled to visit the class in January to accept the donation.
