How is the use of formative assessment making a difference for students?

  • We started aligning ourselves with the Ministry scale this year…was using it flipped in previous years. Students find this more clear and less confusing.​

  • Students are actively asking for criteria before start of assignments. They value and appreciate knowing where their learning is leading to. Also demonstrates motivation and students taking ownership of their learning​

  • Students are growing in their understanding of where they are in their learning. Where they identify themselves on the proficiency scale is usually a match to where they are based on teacher feedback

What are our next steps?

  • Continue using District guidelines when it comes to proficiency scale/percentages. It’s been a year of adjustment for teachers rethinking our scale. ​

  • Try to get students more involved in identifying criteria and co-constructing it with them​

  • Simplifying learning maps so they are more student friendly (eg. Language used)​

  • Using the maps more actively throughout the year rather than only during reporting period
