Around the district is a monthly update that includes a collection of stories from Richmond schools. These stories highlight Richmond's vibrant learning community which fosters student engagement, creativity, and well-being in inclusive learning environments.

Every September, students and staff come together to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It's a time when schools actively participate in meaningful activities, aiming to deepen their understanding of Indigenous history and voices, fostering a more inclusive educational environment.

One group of students set out on an educational walking field trip to delve into the deep-rooted history of Indigenous communities in Steveston. This hands-on experience complemented their in-class learning about the local First Peoples and their profound relationship with the land. To convey their enriched understanding, students crafted informative pamphlets, websites, and engaging PowerPoint presentations.

Another group of students delved into the picture book "Shi-shi-etko," explored online resources, and undertook a colorful feather decorating project. These vibrant feathers adorned classroom windows and served as a powerful symbol of mutual respect.

One school experienced a wonderful surge of creativity as students and staff joined forces for a unique beading project. Together, they skillfully handcrafted orange shirt day pins, symbolizing unity and the importance of respect.

These initiatives illustrate the district’s dedication to truth, understanding, and reconciliation. They signify our commitment to respecting Indigenous history and experiences. In doing so, we strive for a future that is not only more inclusive, but also deeply appreciative of the rich tapestry of Indigenous cultures and traditions.

As a school district, we place immense value on ensuring a seamless transition between school and childcare within each child's educational journey. The introduction of the Seamless Day Kindergarten program reflects our commitment to creating a comprehensive and supportive environment.

Each morning, children are warmly embraced in a nurturing environment, setting the stage for a day of productive learning. Dedicated Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) collaborate closely with Kindergarten teachers to provide essential support and guidance throughout the instructional day. This dynamic partnership significantly enriches the overall educational experience for our young learners.

Melody W, a highschool student in Richmond, made an incredible impact by raising $5,000 for the Richmond Hospital Foundation through her solo art exhibition.

Inspired by the artwork adorning the walls of Richmond Hospital, and recognizing the hospital’s need for financial support, Melody took the initiative to organize this fundraiser. Her goal was not only to showcase the beauty of life through her artwork, but also to inspire others to contribute to the community.

Melody’s dedication and talent serve as a shining example of the positive influence young individuals can have on their communities. Her remarkable contributions and unwavering commitment are not only an inspiration to her peers, but also a source of pride for the entire community of Richmond.

In the Richmond School District, the safety and well-being of our students is at the core of everything we do. As we step into a new school year, we are pleased to share that Whiteside and Bridge elementary schools have recently completed their seismic upgrades.

With these upgrades, we're not just strengthening the foundations of our buildings; we're building a brighter, safer future for our students and staff. Furthermore, our strong partnership with the Ministry of Education and Child Care reflects our shared commitment to creating a nurturing and secure environment where learning flourishes.

As a district, we are committed to providing learning environments where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected. This mural is a testament to that commitment. It reminds us that through art, we can connect, celebrate diversity, and create a more inclusive educational community.

Throughout the creation of this mural, our students shared ideas about what makes them unique. They shared ideas about places that make them feel safe, and about things they are curious about. Their voices played an essential role in shaping this project. The artwork itself beautifully represents our students' passions, creativity, and connection to the natural world. Through its vivid imagery and meaningful symbols, it serves as a visual celebration of both unity and individuality.

This video highlights the Richmond Board of Education’s commitment to Strategic Priority 2: Equity and Inclusion, demonstrating how art can serve as a powerful tool in fostering these ideals. Equity and inclusion are foundational to learning and leading, and are critical to success, wellbeing, and fulfillment. It is our mission to ensure that all of our students, families, and staff feel welcomed, are treated respectfully, and have a sense of belonging. We acknowledge our responsibility to support all learners so they may successfully complete their education with a sense of dignity, purpose, and options.

Funded through the City of Richmond's Mural Program, this initiative provides opportunities to add vibrancy to highly visible public spaces, foster community dialogue and cross-cultural exchange, and engage diverse and multi-generational communities, further exemplifying our shared commitment to creating inclusive and welcoming environments.

In September, students from across the district eagerly laced up their running shoes, full of excitement, to honor Terry Fox's legacy. From elementary to high school, students of all ages came together with great energy, all sharing a strong commitment to continue Terry's special mission.

The students’ enthusiastic participation in the event was a tribute to Terry's unbreakable determination and unwavering dedication to advancing cancer research. This remarkable event served as a strong reminder of how Terry Fox's legacy continues to inspire generations, motivating them to be part of a mission larger than themselves, to help make a world without cancer a reality.

As autumn began, students returned to a school garden adorned with a magnificent array of sunflowers, creating a delightful sight for students and staff alike. These cheerful blooms captivated the attention of our young learners and become a hub of activity for various creatures.

Students eagerly embraced the opportunity to observe the sunflowers up close, learning about their lifecycle and the fascinating interactions they foster with visiting insects and birds. Additionally, their artistic talents have shone as they've been busy creating vibrant sunflower drawings, adding their unique touch to the colorful garden display.

This engaging experience not only celebrated the beauty of nature but also inspired creativity in our students, fostering a deeper connection with the world around them.

Students embarked on a captivating and unconventional learning adventure: The Zombie Apocalypse. This innovative activity not only fueled their scientific curiosity but also sharpened their observation, estimation, and measurement skills.

During this intriguing journey, students measured the length of severed body parts, gauged the mass of zombie skin, and even assessed the temperature of brain soup! Taking it a step further, they delved into calculating the volume of zombie blood and used microscopes to estimate the number of mutated cells in blood samples to detect infection.

Beyond the thrilling scientific aspect, this unique activity encouraged students to contemplate the passive voice in their lab reports. The combination of science and creativity not only captivated young minds but also guaranteed a memorable and enlightening classroom experience at school.
