Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer students the opportunity to experience college and university–level learning while still in a supportive secondary school environment.

Why choose AP?

AP courses can help students:

  • Earn post-secondary credit based on exam results, subject to individual institution policies
  • Potentially receive exemption from introductory university or college courses
  • Develop strong study habits and academic skills needed for post-secondary success
  • Build confidence in meeting the expectations of higher education
  • Challenge themselves academically and explore advanced areas of interest
  • Potentially reduce the time and cost required to complete a degree

Students who successfully complete AP courses may earn up to four additional credits toward their graduation transcript.

AP courses are offered at all secondary schools in the district; however, specific course offerings vary by school and depend on enrolment. For details about available AP courses, please contact your secondary school directly.

Advanced Placement Exams

The Richmond School District offers students the opportunity to write Advanced Placement (AP) exams each spring. AP exams allow students to earn university-level credit or advanced standing, depending on their results and post-secondary institution policies.

AP exam registration is available only to students currently enrolled in one of Richmond’s ten secondary schools and who have a valid student number. Registration information will be shared every spring on the district website and directly through schools.
