Some teachers at Talmey were noticing the following about their learners:

  • Our learners are stronger readers than we realized after getting to know them in first term

  • Learners need more support in writing, especially creative writing and making connections

  • Anxiety and lack of confidence surrounding writing (i.e. not having ideas, don't know where to start, working independently, limited vocabulary)

So they asked the following inquiry questions:

  • How can we help students be able to use writing strategies to communicate and be effective writers?

  • How can we use UDL and differentiated instruction to promote a sense of belonging and increase engagement for all learners?

Because

  • We want to encourage all our students, especially our ELL students, to feel independent and confident in their writing.

  • We want students to be familiar with a variety of ways to share their ideas and be able to choose a strategy that aligns with their strengths.
