The district is formally marking National Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day on September 29 and is encouraging staff and students to wear orange. Schools will be closed on September 30 so that we can remember and reflect on our history.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours all of the children of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. As a district, we are committed to acknowledging the painful history and the ongoing impacts of residential schools. Our collective learning and understanding of the truth of our history is a vital component of the reconciliation process and public schools play a huge role in that process.
Leading up to September 30, Richmond students and staff across the district will be engaging in many meaningful learning opportunities to honour the history and legacy of residential schools.

Orange Shirt Day
Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for all members of our district to wear orange in honour of the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada. It is a national movement to recognize the survivors of residential schools and show a collective commitment to ensure that Every Child Matters.
The Richmond Board of Education is committed to reconciliation and invites all members of our school communities to participate in Orange Shirt Day events to recognize and raise awareness about the history and legacies of the residential schools in Canada.
