To the Residents of Richmond,
As the provincial election approaches, we are presented with an important opportunity to shape the future of our community. Public education remains one of the most significant investments in our collective future, and we believe it is essential to ensure that our schools are well-equipped to support the success of every student.
The Richmond Board of Education recognizes the importance of advocating for public education, and we encourage you to ask candidates questions that directly impact the quality of education in Richmond.
Here are four important questions to ask candidates:
- How will you ensure that capital funding is secured for the construction of two new schools in Richmond’s city centre to meet the growing demand for student spaces?
Richmond’s city centre is experiencing significant population growth due to newly approved housing developments and an influx of young families. Without immediate capital funding for two new schools, our community will face challenges in accommodating students, which will impact the quality of education and student well-being.
- What steps will you take to secure provincial funding for Richmond’s seismic mitigation program to ensure the safety of over 10,000 students in high-risk schools?
22 schools in our community have been identified with a high seismic risk rating, including 18 elementary schools and four secondary schools. Securing timely funding is critical to the safety and well-being of our students and staff.
- How will you advocate for increased mental health supports and inclusive education programs to ensure that all students have access to the resources they need to succeed?
Inclusive education, mental health, and culturally responsive learning environments are fundamental to student success. There is a growing need for mental health resources and targeted support for Indigenous learners, children and youth in care, and students with disabilities and diverse abilities.
- How will you support the recruitment and retention of teachers and educational assistants in Richmond schools?
Recruiting and retaining teachers and educational assistants remains a challenge, including specialized roles such as English language learning, learning resource, and school counselling. By partnering with post-secondary institutions, we can offer apprenticeship opportunities and localized teacher training programs that will help attract and retain talent.
We encourage you to ask these important questions as you engage with candidates in the upcoming election. Together, we can ensure that public education remains a priority in our community.
