Textiles students had the opportunity to learn from industry professionals during a special visit from guests connected to the Fashion Design program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU). The session provided valuable insights into post-secondary pathways in fashion, offering a firsthand look at program expectations, application requirements, and strategies for success.

One of the highlights of the visit was a hands-on sewing workshop where participants explored the intricate art of Canadian smocking, a technique that involves manipulating fabric into textured, three-dimensional patterns through precise folds and stitching. Along with mastering new techniques, they had the chance to examine high-end, zero-waste garment design, gaining insight into the creativity and innovation shaping sustainable fashion.

This experience broadened their understanding of fashion design and sparked inspiration for upcoming upcycling and thrift-flipping projects. By engaging with experts and seeing the possibilities within the industry, participants left with new skills, ideas and a clearer vision of potential future opportunities in fashion.
