The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program provides settlement support and services for immigrants, refugees and newcomers, with a focus on the Richmond school system.

After registering with our district, a settlement worker will contact newcomer families to help the student(s) and family adjust to school(s) and their new Richmond community.

Our team helps newcomer families to build connections and provide support and guidance to independently access services and resources within Richmond schools.

Our team of settlement workers provide services in a variety of ways:

  • One-to-one and family orientations
  • Online and in-person information workshops
  • Referrals and connections to community resources
  • Community connection activities and experiences
