- Colts Young Parent Program
The Colt Young Parent Program is designed to meet the needs of pregnant and parenting youth, ages 13-26. The program is staffed by a Richmond School District teacher and a Family Support Worker. While in school, students can access a fully subsidized, onsite licensed daycare.
Program Structure
The program is Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Some students may leave earlier or start later depending on the age and needs of their child. The student population is diverse, and a key aim is to provide support and/or connect students with appropriate resources. Many professionals from community partners will connect with students at school, as we have offices that provide privacy.
At Colts, we offer many academic courses. If the student is interested in a specific course that we don’t offer, we will work with Continuing Education and RVS to provide the needed course. Colt parents can also take classes in the mainstream program at Richmond Secondary. While we have a strong academic focus, we also have a lot of fun. Each year, we go on many fieldtrips and host many speakers.
Along with the academic component, students receive support from a Family Support Worker. Some examples of this support include parenting and life skills, counselling, crisis intervention, connecting with community professionals, outreach services, and applying for post-secondary education.
