The Richmond School District provides school bus transportation for eligible students and limited courtesy riders. Services are provided in accordance with Board Policy 522 – Transportation and its regulations. This page explains who is eligible, how to apply, and when families can expect schedules.
Eligibility
School bus transportation is provided free of charge to students who meet the following criteria:
- Kindergarten to Grade 3: Student lives more than 4.0 km from their catchment school.
- Grades 4 to 12: Student lives more than 4.8 km from their catchment school.
Distances are measured by the nearest passable road.
Students with physical or mental disabilities that prevent safe travel to and from school may also qualify for bus transportation or transportation assistance. These arrangements are made under the advice of a physician and/or the district medical health officer.
How to Apply
- Registration opens after Spring Break each year.
- Deadline – May 1: Applications received by this date are guaranteed consideration for September placement.
- Late applications: Any applications received after May 1 will be processed after Labour Day.

Courtesy Riders
Students who are not eligible for regular bus service may apply as courtesy riders.
- Seats are not guaranteed.
- Courtesy rider applications are placed on a waitlist.
- If seats are available, placement begins after October 1.
- Families are responsible for arranging transportation until a seat is confirmed.

- Bus schedules will be emailed to families one week before school starts in September.
