Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Richmond Board of Education would like to thank the many families who have shared their thoughts regarding the recent changes to the Richmond Elementary School Track Meet. We recognize that this is a popular event in our district and understand that changes to its format can raise important questions and concerns.
This year, the track meet followed a new format including gender-neutral events, and individual ribbons were not awarded. Some families have expressed support for these changes, while others have shared concerns about their impact on student motivation, fairness and the overall experience. Please know that we hear you, and your feedback is important to us.
As this is the first year of the revised format, district staff have developed a survey for parents, students, and school staff, to be distributed after the final track meet has taken place. The purpose of this survey is to gather input on how the new format worked, what was successful, and what may need improvement.
District staff have also been asked to prepare a report summarizing the survey results and recommended next steps. This report will be presented at the public board of education meeting on June 17, and the public will have the opportunity to view the findings, ask questions and share their thoughts.
Our goal is to ensure that district events are inclusive, meaningful, and supportive of student growth. We want every student to feel proud of their efforts and connected to their school community.
Thank you for taking the time to share your views. Your involvement helps us make thoughtful and informed decisions, and we encourage you to participate in the upcoming survey.
Sincerely,
Ken Hamaguchi, Chairperson
On behalf of the Board of Education (Richmond)
