Literacy development is fundamental for children’s success at school. The Richmond School District has always recognized the importance of supporting children in K-3 to develop as effective communicators, readers, and writers. With this in mind, the district formed an Early Literacy Working Group in the fall of 2019 to focus on a coherent understanding of the components and practices of effective early literacy learning. While the pandemic hindered the Working Group’s progress, it continues to work together to foster understanding and create a set of resources to support learning and assessment practices. This work aligns with Goal 4 of Strategic Priority 1 – Inspired Learners. In particular, Objective 1: develop and implement a K-12 literacy vision and framework.
